PROPERTIES OF S-BLOCK
- The s-block elements of the periodic table are those in which the last electron enters the outermost S-orbital .
- As the S-orbital can accommodate only two electrons to group belong to the S-block of the periodic table .
- Group 1 of the periodic table consist of the elements : lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and francium.
- They are collectively known as the alkali metals.
- These are so called because they form hydroxides on reaction with water which are strongly alkaline in nature .
- The elements of group 2 includes beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium and radium.
- These elements with the exception of beryllium are commonly known as oxides and hydroxides are alkaline in nature and these metal oxides are found in the earth's crust .
PROPERTIES OF P- BLOCK
- In P-block elements the last electron Enter The outermost orbital .
- As we know that the number of p orbitals is 3 and therefore the maximum number of electrons that can be accommodated in a set of P orbital is 6 .
- Consequently there are six group of P block element in the periodic table numbering from 13 to 18 .
- Boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine and helium head the groups .
- Their valency cell electronic configuration is
- The inner core of the electronic configuration Mein however differ . The difference in inner core of elements greatly influences their physical properties as well as chemical properties .
PROPERTIES OF D-BLOCK
- The D block of the periodic table contains the element of the group 3 to 12 in which the d orbitals are progressively filled in each of the four long periods .
- There are mainly 4 series of the transition metal 3D series, 4D series, 5D series and 6D series which has Ac and elements from Rf to Cn.
