*METALS*:
1) The surface of the metals is SHINING and can be polished.
2) Metals are in solid form and heavy in weight. EXCEPTION : metals like mercury and gallium exist in liquid form. sodium, potassium, magnesium, aluminum are lighter metals.
3) Metals are HARD. But the hardness differs .
Iron and copper can't be cut with knife while sodium, potassium are relatively soft and can be cut with knife.
4) MALLEABILITY : some metals can be hammered and foils can be prepared . like in the metals like gold, silver and aluminum.
5) DUCTILITY: Some metals are ductile and thin wires can be prepared from them. Example: copper, gold etc.
6) Metals are GOOD conductor of electricity and heat..like copper, silver and gold metals. EXCEPTION: Metals like lead and mercury are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
7) HIGH boiling and melting points. example : melting point of iron(1812K) is very high.
8) SONOROUS : Metals produce ringing sound by striking.
9) Alloys can be prepared by adding one metal to other. Like : brass, German silver etc
*NON METALS*:
1) They do not possess the properties of DUCTILITY and MALLEABILITY.
2) Non-metals in solid form are BRITTLE.
3) They are not LUSTROUS. EXCEPTION: iodine possess lustor.
4) Non-metals are generally strong. EXCEPTION: Diamond is the hardest substance.
5) Non -metals are BAD conductors of electricity and heat. EXCEPTION: graphite is known slas good conductor of electricity.
