For example by, Kolbe's electrolytic method, electrolysis of aqueous solution of potassium acetate gives ethane. At anode acetate ion forms acetate free radical. This free radical undergoes decarboxylation to form methyl free radical. This methyl free radical then dimerises to form ethane.
