Sodium, on coming in contact with water, reacts explosively and forms sodium hydroxide. Thus no sodium is left for laboratorical use. Phosphorus is a non metal and doesn't react with water. Thus phosphorus can be preserved in water.

HEY MATE HERE IS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION...

▶️FIRST OF ALL SODIUM IS A HIGHLY REACTIVE METAL WHICH IN CONTACT WITH WATER REACTS VIGOROUSLY TO FORM THE CORRESPONDING SALTS ENERGY.
▶️BUT PHOSPHORUS ARE NON METALS AND WE KNOW NON METALS ARE NON Reactive WITH WATER AS IT IS ITSELF A ACCEPTOR OF HYDROGEN ATOM.
