write the relationship between emperical formula and molecular formula.

The molecular formula of a compound shows the actual whole number quantity of each atom/ion that makes up a compound whereas the empirical formula is the experimentally determined simplified ratio of the numbers of atoms/ions that make up a compound. Oftentimes the numbers are the same, and thus the molecular weights will be the same. If not, multiplying the numbers of atoms/ions in the empirical formula by a 2 or a 3 (or some multiple that results in the same molecular weights) will result in the molecular formula.
