Poland was immensely important to Stalin for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he needed to control the Insterburg Gap - the main invasion route in and out of Russia, and that meant controlling Poland. There was also the fact that Stalin had been involved in the unsuccessful Red Army attempt to invade Poland in 1920.
