Concave mirror:-

- object distance is negative, image distance is negative for real images and positive for virtual images. Focus is always neagative

Convex mirror

-Image distance is positive, object distance is negative and focus is always positive.

Sign conventions for convex mirror

↪ The focal length of the convex mirror ( f ) is positive .

↪ The distance of the image from the mirror ( v ) is positive .

↪ The distance of the object from the mirror ( u ) is negative .

↪ The radius of curvature of the mirror ( r ) is positive .

↪ The height of the image ( h ) is taken as positive .

Sign conventions for concave mirror

↪ The focal length of the concave mirror ( f ) is negative .

↪ The distance of the image from the mirror ( v ) is negative .

↪ The distance of the object from the mirror ( u ) is negative when the image is formed behind the mirror while it is positive when the image is formed in front of the mirror .

↪ The radius of curvature of the mirror ( r ) is negative .

↪ The height of the image ( h ) is taken as positive when image is erect otherwise it is negative .

Explanation :

The optical centre is chosen as the origin of the coordinate system .

As we move upwards , the units will be positive .

As we move downwards , the units will be negative .

As we move towards the right , units will be positive .

As we move towards the left , units will be negative .
