political leadership began to put their minds together to thrash out a model of future India, they had many issues to resolve. However, there was no such ambiguity on the issue of democracy. It was a foregone conclusion, even before the Constituent Assembly began the business of finalizing the political structure of the new State, that it would be a democracy. More than half a century has since passed and that consensus about democracy remains. India rightly claims to be the largest democracy in the world and it takes pride from the fact that we are one of the very few post-colonial countries where it has survived successfully.
