Speech on Organ Donation

Hello Everyone – Warm Greetings to all of you!

I heartily welcome you all to this awareness program for organ donation. I am pleasantly surprised to see such a huge gathering of people today and also overwhelmed to receive humongous support of everyone present here to make this program a success by spreading greater awareness amongst the masses and making them aware of their social responsibility.

Ladies and Gentleman, organ donation, as we all know, is the process of donating an organ by an individual to someone who critically needs it. The organ is transplanted through surgical procedures in the recipient’s body. But do you know in what ways organ donation can actually help the recipient? It can help the recipient in many ways, such as improving his/her health, quality and duration of life and even protecting him from death or other worse conditions, such as paralysis.

Any person who is above 18-years of age is entitled to become a donor no matter what his/her background is. In fact, children under 18 years of age are free to donate their organs after seeking permission from their parents/guardian. It may come as a great shock to you that there are some organs which can be donated even if the donor is alive whereas some organs can only be transplanted when the donor is dead. After getting yourself registered as a donor with an organization, you will receive a donor card which will make you fit for donation when you are no more. The body of a single donor can save the lives of about 50 people. There is no age bar, which implies that people between the age group of 70 to 80 can also successfully donate their organs.

Clearly, there is no scarcity of such people who live in critical conditions and thus need such organs as lungs, kidney, heart or liver, which have either stopped functioning properly because of some disease or perhaps have remained congenitally malformed in their bodies. Not only organs, but tissues as well can be donated. Lungs, kidneys, small bowel, heart, liver and pancreas are important organs which are donated for the purpose of transplantation.

Likewise, the tissues of bone, skin, cornea, cartilage, tendons and heart valves can also be put for donation. Moreover, it is entirely the call of the donor whether he/she wishes to donate the entire body or some specific parts of his/her body to the patient. There are many countries which have set up an association for organ donation and which are approved as well as legalized to preserve organs donated by people  from that country itself. Depending on the situation, the organs are either preserved or straight away sent for transplantation in a patient’s body.

Till the time of recovery, it becomes important that oxygen and blood appropriately flow through that person’s body so that no problem occurs at the time of transplantation. Thus, those who have a healthy body must come forward for this cause and donate their organs so that some other person can breathe his/her life when we breathe our last.

Thank You!
