The play opens with Scene 1 Act 1.

Antonio, the most popular and wealthiest merchant of Venice, is vaguely troubled. He is talking with one of his friends, Salarino, who is also a merchant. Antonio feels sad and depressed, but he doesn't know what is bugging him so much.  Salarino first thinks that he is worried about his trading vessels in the sea. Yet, this is not the case. He  then suggests that Antonio must be in love. Antonio doesn't agree to either of the suggestions. Salarino tries to cheer him up, but to no avail.

Then Bassanio, Lorenzo, Gratiano-other friends of Antonio-enter. After a brief conversation within themselves, everybody departs the scene except for Bassanio and Antonio. The group of friends were to meet again for dinner.

While together, Bassanio opens up to Antonio that he loves Portia, a rich heiress. He plans to go to her mansion and woo her. However, he is in dire need of money. Bassanio is full of debts that were yet to repay. So, he asks Antonio for help.

Without any doubt or hesitation, Antonio promises to help him like a true friend should. Since he doesn't have money with him at the moment, he sends Bassanio to look for moneylenders in the town who would be interested to lend him the money. The debt would be paid by Antonio.

Act 1 Scene 1 then closes.

Hope this helps you! :-)
