What is Nylon used for:

Nylon is used for a variety of applications, including clothing, reinforcement in rubber material like car tires, for use as a rope or thread, and for many injection molded parts for vehicles and mechanical equipment.

The Invention of Nylon :

The invention of nylon by Wallace Carothers (1896-1937) in 1935 launched the age of artificial fabrics and established basic principles of polymer chemistry that made plastics an ubiquitous part of civilization. Nylon itself has an unparalleled range of advantageous properties, including high strength, flexibility, and scratch resistance. Nylon has been overtaken in popularity by polyester, but it is still widely used in clothing, carpeting, toothbrushes, and furnishings. Artificial fibers, which make up a multi-billion dollar industry, offer the ability to control characteristics in ways that are impossible with natural fibers. In fact, today's polymers have replaced natural materials in many applications, including most textiles in the U.S. They have provided new materials, such as lightweight, shock-resistant body armor, that have characteristics that are impossible to reproduce by natural methods. Nylon and other polymers have also created environmental concerns and disposal problems, leading to widespread efforts at recycling.

Why nylon is so strong:

The nylon molecules are very flexible with only weak forces, such as hydrogen bonds, between the polymer chains, which tend to tangle randomly. The polymer has to be warmed and drawn out to form strong fibres.

story behind the nylon:

Gladding replaced the “r” by an “l” and the “u” first by an “i” and than by a “y” – and the word “nylon” was coined. ... One of these interpretations is that “nylon” came from “New York” and “London”, because two chemists thought up the word on an intercontinental flight from one of the cities to the other.

When it was created:

Carothers excelled at creating polymers, and his work quickly led to the E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company's highly successful commercial production of neoprene, the first synthetic rubber made in the United States (1932), and nylon, the world's first totally synthetic textile fiber (1939).

how was nylon created :

It created fibers! But they were weak. They had formed by the polymerizing process known as a condensation reaction, in which individual molecules join together, with water as a byproduct. The chemists called it Nylon 66 because the adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine each contain 6 carbon atoms per molecule.
