On October 4, we all were decorating our house to celebrate the most long awaited festival, diwali. My heart was filled with excitement to meet my father after a long gap of six years. But, a call from the army headquarters left us stunned.
It was my father’s colleague Mr Raj speaking. My Dad and uncle were in the army for more than 15 years and were best friends. Uncle told us that my father will not be coming as he had to report to another army camp within the next two days. There was an Emergency requirement and my father along with uncle and a few others had to leave immediately.
When we asked uncle where my father was, he said that he was in a meeting with the Brigadier about the coming up operation. He then added that my father had a mild sprain on his left hand, but there was nothing to worry. All of us were quite upset after the phone call as we were looking forward to father’s visit. No one was in a mood to continue decorating the house.
Suddenly, we heard our gate opening. We were in for a surprise when we saw our father and Raj uncle come up to the front door. I ran to open the door and hugged my father in delight. Raj uncle had a hearty laugh and said that he had made the phone call on behalf of my father to give us a surprise. My father had done the same to uncle’s family too. Both of them were actually expected only a couple of days later, but had actually come home earlier.

Uncle told us that there was an emergency in the neighboring army camp and that a few army personnel had been sent there on deputation. My father was one of them. All of us were quite upset and stopped the decoration work. I was also quite upset and ran to my room. Although I tried to console myself by reading my favorite novel, my mind was full of thoughts of what I had planned to do with my Dad.
Suddenly, I heard the gate opening followed by the doorbell ringing. I was in no mood to go and see who it was. Suddenly, I heard my mother shout Raj in excitement. I could not believe my ears. Raj was my father’s name. I rushed to the hall to see my father standing there. He picked me up in his arms and gave me a big hug. He then explained that it was not Brigadier Uncle but himself who had spoken in Uncle’s voice to fool us.
