Answer:

  • Dihalides are two types one is Gem dihalides and another one is vicinal di-halides.
  • In Gem halides, “two halogen atoms” are bonded with same carbon atom whereas “two halogen atoms” are bonded with adjacent carbon atoms.
  • Vicinal dihalides are produced by the reaction of “a halogen and an alkene”, compounds which have halogens on the adjacent carbons.  
  • For example: The reaction between ethylene and chlorine gives 1,2-dichloroethane compounds it’s adjacent carbons have halogen atoms.
