TOPIC :- NITROGEN

Nitrogen exist as a linear, diatomic, inert gas. It is an inert gas because its bond dissociation enthalpy is so high.

There are three bonds in nitrogen molecule . So, the degree of in saturation is two . Its structure is in the attachment.

Why it has three bonds ?

In nitrogen, the number of electrons in bonding molecular orbital is six greater than that of antibonding molecular orbital .

and, we know

bond order = 1/2 ( diff. of no. of electrons in two orbitals )

= 1/2 (6) = 3.
