According to the poet in this stanza, the act of discrimination is the act of human sin which ultimately leads to death. The last two lines of the poem, brings the whole concept of the story narrated that it is the coldness of heart and a lack of human spirit that killshumanity as a whole and not the cold outside.

The Cold within refers to the feelings of hatred, jealousy and selfishness which men have in their hearts. They fail to be kind and compassionate to the man next to them. They have so much coldness within that the cold within is more fatal than the cold outside. No one is ready to give up their log of wood for another person which ironically results in their death. Thus it proves that the coldness within a man's heart will spell doom for his own self.
Each person is afficted with some kind of prejudice or vice which is represented by the log of wood they are holding in their hands. If they had given their logs of wood they might have survived the cold or gone into the other world without carrying the burden of sins. This the poet appeals to us to be generous and compassionate towards our fellow human beings and not to lead a life full of ill feelings which will at the end lead to our own destruction.
