According to a legend, Saint Peter comes to the door of a little cottage where a woman is making cakes. He asked her for some, as he was hungry. The lady made a lot of cakes, but they seemed too big to give to him. Saint Peter got angry at her greed and cursed her to become a woodpecker and bore trees for food for eternity.

Ballad is such kind of poem which tells a story in short stanzas and in the poem all the stanzas comprise four lines.
