Question- Write the thermal decomposition reaction of following compounds

(1) Pb(OH)₂

(2) MgCO₃

(3) Ca(HCO₃)₂

(4) KNO₃

Answer- Thermal decomposition of given compounds is written below-

(1) Pb(OH)₂

Pb(OH)₂ -> PbO + H2O

Products formed will be lead oxide and water.

The temperature for this reaction is around 100-145° C.

(2) MgCO₃

MgCO₃ -> MgO + CO2

The products formed will be magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide.

The temperature of reaction will be around 350° C.

(3) Ca(HCO₃)₂

Ca(HCO₃)₂ -> CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O

The thermal decomposition of calcium bicarbonate will yield products namely, calcium carbonate, carbon dioxide and water.

The temperature of occurrence of this reaction is around 825° C

(4) KNO₃

KNO₃ -> KNO2 + O2

Potassium nitrate after undergoing thermal decomposition will give products namely, potassium nitrite and oxygen.

The temperature of reaction will be 400-520° C.
