There are total seven periodsin Modern Periodic Table. Every period is numbered by 1, 7. We know that, All the elements in the period have the same number of shells.

Vertical columns of the periodic table are called as Groups. There are 18 groups in the periodic table.

The first period is the shortest having only two elements : Hydrogen and Helium

The two next rows are 2nd and 3rd periods of periodic table. The next two periods have 18 elements.

7th period is the longest period which have 32 elements. it is the longest period of periodic table.
