When phenol is treated with dilute nitric acid in prescence of concentrated sulphuric acid even though the benzene ring is quite activated by -OH group.

Two electrophilic substitution products are formed wherein one of the product, Nitro group gets attached to Ortho position and the other at para position to -OH group.

So, to observe here that there will be intramolecular hydrogen bonding between -OH hydroxyl and nitro (-NO2) group so this will be more volatile than the para Compound which will have good intermolecular Hydrogen bonding and hence by using fractional distillation both of the compounds can be seperated from each other.
