A chemical reaction takes place when the rain (i.e. carbonic acid) meets the limestone (i.e. calcite). The acid H2CO3 and the CaCO3 combine to form HCO3 + HCO3 + Ca.

Balanced chemical equation showing result of strong heating of limestone:

Explanation:

The chemical name of lime stone is calcium carbonate.

When it is strongly heated it undergoes a chemical process called as thermal decomposition.  It leads to the formation of two compounds namely calcium oxide and carbon-di-oxide by breaking of calcium carbonate.

This process is considered as important one because products formed by thermal decomposition of limestone are used in manufacturing of many other chemicals such as slaked lime etc.
