Character sketch of Helen Keller

Helen Adams Keller is the main character of the novel 'The Story of My Life', and it is her autobiography that we have presented through the book. She was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA. She lost her eyesight and hearing after an illness when she was just nineteen months old. Despite her disability leaving her shattered, she achieved a lot in life with her will power, dedication and focus.

In spite of her disability, Helen shared a number of character traits with the children of her age. As a child, Helen was curious to learn and know about the things around her. This made her a sharp observer. She was also jealous of her little sister and saw her an intruder who came to share their mother's love. Helen did want to depend on others and preferred to be self - sufficient. She was also quiet daring and brave, as she climbed a tree on her own in spite of her first frightening experience of being on a tree in a thunderstorm. When Helen was accused of plagiarism, she felt disgraced, but over a period of time she put this incident behind her and started writing again. This also shows her courageous side. Her account is a proof of the sheer hard work and determination that she had. For deaf and blind person to master the skills of reading, writing and speaking is indeed an achievement.
