there are three main methods of representing scale on a map;
1- A statement - in this method scale is stated in words or we make a statement about it e.g., 1 cm to 1 km, 1 inch to 5 miles.
2-Linear or graphic scale- in this method the scale is represented by a straight line divided into equal parts [primary and secondary] to show what these markings represent on the actual ground.
3- the numerator is always expressed as unity i.e., one unit map distance is equivalent to a number of units of ground distance. This fraction is called representative fraction.

The three methods used to represent the map scale are:
Bar Scales:
- Bar scales display scale using image format.
- The actual length of the bar scale indicates what that length represents in real world units.
Speaker Scale:
- For example the word scale, 1 ″ = 100 ′ means one inch of the map represents 100 feet down.
A representative fraction:
- This type of scale representation looks very similar to the representative part (RF).
- However, the representative part avoids the use of units in defining a map scale.
