A social issue is a problem that influences a considerable number of the individuals within a society. It is often the consequence of factors extending beyond an individual's control, and is the source of a conflicting opinion on the grounds of what is perceived as a morally just personal life or societal order.[clarification needed] Social issues are distinguished from economic issues; however, some issues (such as immigration) have both social and economic aspects. There are also issues that don't fall into either category, such as warfare.

There can be disagreements about what social issues are worth solving, or which should take precedence. Different individuals and different societies have different perceptions.

Poverty, violence, crime and racism are major social problems. If we look at the definition of what a social problem is, according to James M. Henslin,"A social problem isan aspect of society that people are concerned about and would like changed. Social problems begin with an objective condition, some aspect of society that can be measured or experienced...The second key element of a social problem is subjective concern, the concern that a significant number of people (or a number of significant people) have about the condition"(Social Problems,2003,p.3). Steinberg believes that disengagement has what it takes to not only be a general social problem but says it is as major as the issues

Illiteracy is one of the important social issues in the present times

Social issue:

As per 2011 census, 70% of  the population have the ability to read and write. Remaining, they fall under the category of illiterate. This is seen as a social evil exist in the society. The main cause for illiteracy is poor economic situation and poverty. It becomes more important to feed the stomach than to the mind. Despite taking meassures to eradicate illiteracy, many rural  areas remain unnoticed and are not taken into consideration.

Education has become a profit making business now-a-days. We see people marching towards private schools and colleges for their higher standards. They have lost confidence in the Government schools though huge funds are being invested in them. A small portion of the population do not want their children to get educated because of their Poverty level. They feel that their children would work and earn for their family. This is a multidimentional issue where many factors contribute to a single problem.

Political issues:

India being one of the largest populous countries in the world. It carries a lot of traditional values and cultures. The unique aspect about Indians is "Unity in Diversity". But the problems that the people face are driven by the cultural and religious aspects. We see a lot of hatred between two religions in India. Many political parties use this for their political benefit. People get easily driven by their religious leaders. More than religion, Humanity matters the most.

Linguistic features of India make us unique and peaceful. But when the same is being used to disportionate the unity in us, it is a misery. Keeping aside the religious and linguistic aspects, we are humans and we have a very short period of time. In this short span, we must spread love and ensure peace in the country.
