Newton first law has great significance. It says that,

A body will not change it state until acted upon by an unbalanced force.

This law defines what a force is or what is the work of force that means this statement gives qualitative explanation of force.

The meaning of this law simple, it just says if state/configuration of given body is fixed then to change its configuration you have to apply an unbalanced force, Now question arises why an unbalanced force? Now if you apply some force on a body with one side and also you apply same force on the body from different side then they will cancel the of each other,So the force must be unbalanced to show it effect or rather change the State of body.

Now if you ask about the application of this force then this law is basically a qualitative law not a quantitative law so you can't apply it in solving numericals stuffs,but to understand what is inertia and what is mass this law is way helpful or we can say this law is core of both concept's.

So using this law you can understand what is inertia and using inertia you can understand what of mass is
