(I) Divide and Rule Policy of the British:

The British rulers adopted the policy of ‘Divide and Rule’ to strengthen their roots while living in India. They divided the people of various communities of India and spread the feeling of distrust among them and hence they sowed the seeds of communalism in India.

(ii) Political Organisations:

Different communal organisations are found in India which have created hatred among the people of various religious communities by propagating, and hence they are the root cause of communalism.

➡️Communalism is basically distinguish between people on the basis of their religion.

➡️There are various reasons for its rise. Britishers Divide And Rule being one of them. Hindustan was divided into two states on the basis of communal majority yet a large population of Muslims reside in India.

➡️Aloofness of Indian muslims from politics has created a lot of communal tensions and a sense of separation of Muslim population from the state activities .

➡️Emergence of communal parties - political parties are also taking advantage of communalism in the growing competition for political power which ultimately leads to division of people

➡️Poverty - frustrated poor and unemployed youth easily convinced by religious enthusiasts, making them to cause communal riots.
