Concept

Brackets in mathematics are a set of marks like paranthese which are used to enclose a set of terms.

GIven

(a) 8 x ( 16 – 4 )

(b) ( 2+4 )( 14 – 2 )

Find

Two situations where bracket would be necessary.

Solution

a) 8 x ( 16 - 4 )

= 8 x ( 16 - 4 )

= ( 8 x 16 ) - ( 8 x 4 )

= ( 128 - 32 )

= 96

b) ( 2+4 )( 14 – 2 )

=  ( 2+4 )( 14 – 2 )

Opening one of the brackets

= ( 2 x ( 14 - 2 )) + ( 4 x ( 14 - 2 ))

= {( 2 x 14 ) - ( 2 x 2 )} + { ( 4 x 14 ) - ( 4 x 2 )}

= ( 28-4 ) + ( 56 - 8 )

= ( 24 + 48 )

= 72

So,

8 x ( 16 – 4 ) = 96

( 2+4 )( 14 – 2 ) = 72
