Communicable diseases
Microbial diseases that can spread from an infected person to other healthy person through air, water, food, physical contact or by animals are called communicable diseases.
Examples:-
- Cholera
- Common cold
- Chickenpox
- Tuberculosis
Means of spreading:-
1) Through air we breathe:- Microorganisms that cause common cold, tuberculosis, pneumonia etc. spread through the air we breathe. For example:- When a person suffering from cold sneezes or coughs, fine droplets of moisture carrying gems are released in the air. It was then come inside the body of a healthy person.
2) Through the water we drink:- Some diseases spread through water.
Examples:-
- Cholera
- Typhoid
- Jaundice
That's why we are advised to drink boiled water because it kills the microorganisms.
3) Through the food we eat:- Protozoa, bacteria and spores of fungi are present in the soil, from where we enter our food. Therefore we should wash fruits and vegetables before consuming.
4) Through insects and animals:- There are some insects and animals which act as carriers of disease causing microbes. These animals and insects are called vectors.
Examples:-
- Housefly
- Mosquito
Some general methods to prevent these communicable microbial diseases:-
- Wash vegetables and fruits before eating.
- Boil drinking water particularly when there's chance of infection..
- Keep the patient in complete isolation, be away from the infected being.
- Maintain personal hygiene and good sanitary habits.
- Do not eat stale food.
- Do not allow water to stand in surroundings.
- Vaccination to be given at suitable age to get immunity.
- Protect yourself from mosquito bites, always wear full sleeve clothes.
