Elements are substances made up op of same type of atoms and cannot be broken down into simpler substances. Elements are of two types Metals and Non-metals . There are 92 naturally occurring elements and many elements are metals and less than 20 are non-metals. Metalloids posses the characters of both metals and non-metals. Metals are iron, copper, aluminium . Non-metals are oxygen, nitrogen.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF METAL :

1.) Metals are lustrous - they have a shiny appearance eg. gold, silver and is used in jewellery.

2.) Metals are sonorous - they make sound when hit with object. eg. - bell in temples.

3.) Metals are hard and cannot be cut easily. But metals like sodium and potassium are soft and can be cut with a knife.

4.) Metals are ductile - can be made into thin wires. So, metals are used in electrical wires.

5.) Metals are malleable - can be made into thin sheets. so, we have aluminium foil used to wrap food items.

6.) Metals are good conductor of heat. so, they are used in making cooking utensils.

7.) Metals are good conductors of electricity . so, they are used in electrical wires.

Non-metals have a shiny appearance , do not make sound when hit , brittle , not malleable and ductile and are poor conductor of heat and electricity.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF METALS :

1.) REACTIN WITH OXYGEN :

Metals react with  $O_{2}$  to form metal oxides ( basic ) and this oxide when dissolved in water gives metallic hydroxide which is basic in nature.

Eg.  $Magnesium + Oxygen -------> Magnesium Oxide$

      $Magnesium Oxide +water ----------> Magnesium Hydroxide$ ( basic )
