Environmental pollution is the defiling of our land, air and water. It is the biggest problem in the modern world. It is a problem in which the guilty and the innocent suffer alike. It knows no national barriers or differences of caste and religion. The development of science and technology has made our lives very comfortable, but it has also resulted in a fearful population explosion. As a result, our cities have become over-crowded, and their atmosphere has become polluted. The growth of big industries has led to terrible pollution of air, earth and water. Trees and forests which can maintain the environmental balance have been cut down to meet the increasing needs of man. Wildlife is also fast dying out because of deforestation. The ecological balance has been disturbed beyond measure. We have turned the world into a big gas chamber. If this state of affairs is allowed to continue, very soon no life would be left on this planet. The only solution lies in environmental protection through nature conservation. It means telling fishermen that they are catching too many fish. It means telling poor farmers in the tropics that they are chopping down too many trees. It means telling people everywhere that they should use natural resources without destroying them. In other words, they should replace in nature whatever they takeout from it. In fact, environmental awareness is a social necessity. It is not only the duty of the government, but also a social responsibility of each and every individual to help in keeping the environment free from pollution: It is a service not only to oneself but also to the entire humanity.
