In India, research in agriculture had begun as early as 1905. The Indian Agricultural Research Institute was given the status of a university in 1958 and work began in departments. Most significant achievement is the Fundamental research it has conducted on the methods of taking multiple crops in a year, which has been of great benefit to farmers.

Indian Agricultural Research Institute was established to benefit the Indian farmers. It was also known as Pusa Institute, having been established in 1919 in Pusa, Bihar.  Owing to an earthquake, it was relocated to Delhi in 1936.  The Indian Agricultural Research Institute has been responsible for research that led to the advent of Green Revolution in India in the 1970’s, which majorly benefited the farmers.  Though, the farmers could not extract optimal out of the various incentive schemes initiated by the institute due to lack of proper information and awareness.
