They claim both and traffic dept left out the area from no-parking zones.
Even as the is yet to take any action against unknown persons who removed no-parking signboards from Dadar in the middle of the night on Monday, local residents claim that some stretches of and LJ Road in the area are not part of no-parking zones designated by the Mumbai Parking Authority (MPA) plan. Alleging that the removal of boards is a pre-election ploy, they want the civic body to roll back what they call a high-handed parking fine policy.
“The MPA plan and a traffic police notification on no-parking zones, both issued in August, clearly indicate that such a zone extends only from Shiv Sena Bhavan to Babrekar Marg,” said resident Kashmira Savant Patkar. She said the residents of almost 25-30 buildings on Gokhale Road (North) and LJ Road have been forced to park at Kohinoor public parking lot (PPL) which is two km away. The other residents of the area said the imposition of hefty fines up to Rs 10,000 for “so-called illegal parking” was a ploy to extort money from citizens.

In August, the BMC made parking within 500-mt radius of public parking lots illegal and imposed hefty penalty. On Monday night, however, boards warning of these fines were removed by some men who purportedly came in unmarked vehicles. Though this has brought temporary relief, residents fear that the boards will reappear after the elections.
The other key roads off limits for parking are Maharshi Karve Road, LBS Road, SV Road and New Link Road. The BMC had said these are arterial roads with high parking demand. Their road width and land use across residential, commercial and mixed categories were also the reasons for making them no-parking zones. The no-parking stretch on Gokhale Road (North) extends for one km from Portuguese Church to LJ Road Junction. The area includes Shivaji Park and Dadar and Matunga stations.
Gokhale Road residents say a recent notification issued by the traffic police doesn’t have the area listed as no-parking zone
MNS functionary Sandip Deshpande demanded that the BMC should come clean about the removal of boards. He said it seems it has not studied the MPA’s plan at all and has implemented the Rs 10,000-fine in a high-handed manner. “This policy must be scrapped. No residents must be asked to pay up for parking in front of their homes,” he said, alleging that the BMC was acting on behalf of the parking mafia. “The BMC has given out pay and park contracts. After making these roads no-parking zones, it also wants to make money by penalising residents,” he said.
