☣Abu Rayhan al-Biruni (973- AD. 1050), a Moslem astronomer, mathematician, geographer, and historian, was the most acute interpreter of India to Islam in the Middle Ages.

✳He was a learned man with knowledge of languages such as Syriac, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew and Sanskrit. He was taken to Ghazni as a hostage by Sultan Mahmud Ghazni.

☣It was here that he developed an interest in India. By this time, Sanskrit works on astronomy, mathematics and medicine were translated into Arabic. Al-Biruni spent several years with Brahmin priests and scholars learning Sanskrit and their religious practices.

✳Al-Biruni wrote Kitab-Ul-Hind in Arabic. It is divided into 80 chapters on various subjects such as religion, philosophy, astronomy, alchemy, iconography (a study of illustrations and portraits), laws, manners and customs of people and their social life.

☣Al Biruni discussed the Indian case system in detail.
