$x + \frac{1}{x} = 4$

Squaring on both sides!!

${(x + \frac{1}{x} )}^{2} = 16$

$({x)}^{2} +( { \frac{1}{x} )}^{2}+ (2 \times x \times \frac{1}{x}) = 16$

${x}^{2} + \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} } + 2 = 16$

${x}^{2} + \frac{1}{ {x }^{2} } = 14$
