to find

x2+1/x2

x4+1/x4


now apply

(x+1/x)2=x2+1/x2+2
(6)2=x2+1/x2+2
36-2=x2+1/x2
34=x2+1/x2


ii) (x2+1/x2)2=x4+1/x4+4
(34)2=x4+1/x4+4
1156=x4+1/4+4
1156-4=1152=x4+1/x4
