The given quadratic equation is,

x2 + 4x + k = 0

we have, a = 1  ;  b = 4  ;  c = k

now, D = b2 - 4ac = (4)2 - 4(1)(k) = 16 - 4k

for real and distinct roots, D > 0

 So, 16 - 4k > 0

 or, 16 > 4k
16/4 = k
4=k.
