Given: x + 2y = -4

           3x - 5y = -1

To Find: The value of x and y using substitution method.

Solution:

Let x + 2y = -4 be Equation 1.

Let 3x - 5y = -1 be Equation 2.

∴ x + 2y = -4

⇒ x = -4 -2y (Let this be Equation 3)

Substituting the value of x in equation 2,

3 (-4 - 2y) - 5y = -1

⇒ -12 - 6y - 5y = -1

⇒ -6y - 5y = -1 + 12

⇒ -11y = 11

⇒ -y = 1

⇒ y = -1

Substituting the value of y in Equation 3,

x = -4 - 2(-1)

  = -4 + 2

  = -2

Answer: x = -2, y = -1
