Let the '?' be 'a'
( x + 2y ) ^{2} = x^{2} + a + 4y^{2}
x^{2} + ( 2 × x × 2y ) + (2y)^{2} = x^{2} + a + 4y^{2}
x^{2} + 4xy + 4y^{2} = x^{2} + a + 4y^{2}
x^{2} + 4xy + 4y^{2} - x^{2} + 4y^{2} = a
4xy = a
( x + 2y ) ^{2} = x^{2} + a + 4y^{2}
x^{2} + ( 2 × x × 2y ) + (2y)^{2} = x^{2} + a + 4y^{2}
x^{2} + 4xy + 4y^{2} = x^{2} + a + 4y^{2}
x^{2} + 4xy + 4y^{2} - x^{2} + 4y^{2} = a
4xy = a
