x³ + 3x² + 3x + 1 divided by x gives the quotient x² + 3x + 3 and the remainder 1.

\frac{x^3 + 3x^2 + 3x + 1}{x} = \frac{x(x^2 + 3x + 3)}{x} + \frac{1}{x} = x^2 + 3x + 1 + \frac{1}{x}

As 1/x is a fraction, the numerator 1 will be the remainder.
