Answer: \frac{400}{3} meters

Step-by-step explanation:

Since, X covers 1 km in 8 min 40 sec

He covers 1 km = 8 min 40 sec,

⇒ He covers 1000 meter = 520 seconds,

Now,  y covers same distance in 10 min.

He covers 1 km = 10 minutes,

⇒ He covers 1000 meter = 600 seconds.

Since, the race is won by X in 520 seconds,

While the distance covered by Y in 520 seconds = \frac{1000}{600}\times 520

= \frac{520000}{600}=\frac{2600}{3} meters,

⇒ Y lost race by distance =  1000-\frac{2600}{3}=\frac{3000-2600}{3}=\frac{400}{3} meters.
