So I am not sure about the framing of the question but I would like to answer it in a general equations , first of all this test is given by sulphur dioxide gas , and form chromium sulphate

Y => SO2

● Explanation -
X must be some metal sulphite MSO3.
MSO3 + H2SO4 --> MSO4 + H2O + SO2

Here, Y must be SO2 which is colourless gas with irritating smell.

SO2 gas reacts with acidic K2Cr2O7 to give green solution of cupric sulphate.
SO2 + K2Cr2O7 + H2SO4 --> K2SO4 + Cr2(SO4)3 + H2O
