Required Answer:-

Given:

  • x + y = 11
  • 2x - 3y = 7

To find:

  • The value of x and,
  • The value of y

Answer:

  • The value of x is 8 and,
  • The value of y is 3.

Solution:

Using substitution method,

Given,

➡ x + y = 11

➡ x = 11 - y .....(i)

Again,

➡ 2x - 3y = 7 .......(ii)

Substituting x in equation (ii), we get,

➡ 2 × (11 - y) - 3y = 7

➡ 22 - 2y - 3y = 7

➡ -5y = 7 - 22

➡ -5y = -15

➡ y = 3

Hence,

y = 3

From (i), x = 11 - y

= 11 - 3

= 8

Hence,

The value of x is 8 and,

The value of y is 3.

Using elimination method,

Given,

➡ x + y = 11 ......(i)

And,

➡ 2x - 3y = 7 .......(ii)

Multiplying equation (i) by 3, we get,

➡ 3x + 3y = 33 ......(iii)

Adding equations (i) and (iii), we get,

➡ 2x - 3y + 3x + 3y = 7 + 33

➡ 5x = 40

➡ x = 8

From (i), x + y = 11

➡ 8 + y = 11

➡ y = 11 - 8

➡ y = 3

Hence,

x = 8 and

y = 3.

Verification:

Let us verify our result.

When x = 8 and y = 3

x + y

= 8 + 3

= 11 and,

2x - 3y

= 2 × 8 - 3 × 3

= 16 - 9

= 7

Hence, the values of x and y are 8 and 3 (Verified)
