X+y=11, x.y=18 so what is the x^2 + y^2?

(a+b)^2=a^2+2ab+b^2
(a+b)^2-2ab=a^2+b^2
11^2-2*18=a^2+b^2
121-36=a^2+b^2
a^2+b^2=85

(x+y)^2 = x^2+y^2+2xy
now,
x^2 + y^2 = (x+y)^2 - 2xy
substituting the above given values we get,
x^2 + y^2 = (11)^2 - 2(18)
= 121 - 36
= 85
