x + y = 49 ----> (1)

x - y = 3 ----> (2)

Adding equation (1) and (2) :

2x = 52

x = 26

from equation (2) :

x - y = 3

=> 26 - y = 3

=> y = 23

So, x - y = (26 - 23) = 3
