Given :

  • x + y = 8
  • 2x - 3y = 2

To Find :

The value of x and y.

Solution :

⇒ x + y = 8

⇒ y = 8 - x ------ (eq.(i))

2x - 3y = 2

Putting y = 8 - x,

⇒ 2x - 3y = 2

⇒ 2x - 3(8 - x) = 2

Removing the brackets,

⇒ 2x - 24 + 3x = 2

⇒ 5x - 24 = 2

Transposing -24 to RHS,

⇒ 5x = 24 + 2

⇒ 5x = 26

⇒ x = 26/5

⇒ x = 5.2

x = 5.2.

Putting x = 5.2 in eq.(i),

⇒ y = 8 - 5.2

⇒ y = 2.8

y = 2.8.

The value of x = 5.2 and y = 2.8.

Verification :

  • x = 5.2
  • y = 2.8

  • x + y = 8 ------ eq.(i)

LHS :

⇒ 2.8 + 5.2

⇒ 8

LHS = 8.

RHS = 8.

LHS = RHS.

  • 2x - 3y = 2

LHS :

⇒ 2(5.2) - 3(2.8)

⇒ 10.4 - 8.4

⇒ 2

∴ LHS = 2.

∴ RHS = 2.

LHS = RHS.

  • Hence verified.
