Given, x² + 1/x² = 27

or, (x - 1/x)² + 2.x.1/x = 27

or, (x - 1/x)² + 2 = 27

or, (x - 1/x)² = 27 - 2 = 25

or, (x - 1/x)² = 5²

∴ x - 1/x = ± 5

Identity rule :

• a² + b² = (a + b)² - 2ab

• a² + b² = (a - b)² + 2ab
