★ Difference between Metal and non metal on the basis of physical properties :

\large\underline\mathrm\blue{METAL \: :-}

  • Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • Metals are ductile and malleable.
  • Metals are lustrous (shiny) in nature.
  • Metals are strong.

\large\underline\mathrm\blue{NON \: METAL \: :-}

  • Non metals are bad conductor of heat and electricity.
  • Non metals are not strong.
  • Non metals are non lustrous.
  • Non metals are not ductile and malleable.

★ Difference between metals and non metals on the basis of Chemical properties :-

\large\underline\mathrm\blue{METAL \: :-}

  • Metals are electropositive.
  • Metals reacts with water to form hydroxide and hydrogen.
  • Metals reacts with oxygen to form basic oxides.

\large\underline\mathrm\blue{NON \: METAL \: :-}

  • Non metals are electronegative.
  • Non metals don't reacts with water.
  • Non-metals react with oxygen to form acidic oxide.

Physics properties of metal

i) Malleability

Metal can be hammered into thin sheet

ii) Ductility

Metal can be drawn into thin wire

iii) Lustrous

Metal have Shining appearance

iv) Sonorous

Metal produces ringing sound

v) Metal are good conductor of heat and electricity

vi) Metal have high density

Vii) meta have high melting point and boiling point

viii) Generally metal are found in solid state

exp:- Mercury found in liquid in room temperature

ix) Metal have densile strength that is maintain shape and size

Physical properties of non metal

i) Malleability

Non-Metal can't be hammered into thin sheet

ii) Ductility

Non- Metal can't be drawn into thin wire

iii) Lustrous

Non- Metal have not Shining appearance

iv) Sonorous

Non- Metal donot produces ringing sound

v) Non-Metal are not good conductor of heat and electricity

vi) Non- Metal have Low density

Vii) Non-meta have low melting point and boiling point

viii) Generally Non -metal are found in solid , liquid and gas state

exp:- Mercury found in liquid in room temperature

ix)Non- Metal donot have densile strength that is maintain shape and size

Chemical properties of metal

i)Reaction with oxygen

When metal reacts with oxygen to form metal oxide

Different metal React with oxygen under different conditions

Some metal like Na,K , Li donot kept in air because it catches fire immediately

Metal like Al , Zn , Mg when react with oxygen form a protective layer which further oxidation

ii) Reaction with water

Different metal react with water under different conditions

Sodium, potassium, lithium React with cold water and form metal hydroxide and release hydrogen gas

This reaction is highly Exothermic so that the amount of heat produced on it can burn the Hydrogen

=> 2Na + 2H₂0 ⇨ 2NaoH + H₂

When calcium react with water at room temperature to form calcium hydroxide to release hydrogen gas

This Reaction is also Exothermic reaction but the amount of heat is not so sufficient that it can burn hydrogen

so the bubbles of hydrogen stick with clacium due to which calcium start folw on the surface of water

Ca + 2H₂0 ⇨ Ca (OH)₂ + H₂

When Mg reacts with hot water it form magnesium hydroxide and release hydrogen gas

it also start floating on the surface of water

Mg + 2H₂0⇨ Mg(OH)₂ + H₂

Metal react with acid

when metal react with acid if form salt and release hydrogen gas

2HCL + Zn ⇨ ZnCl₂ + H₂

Chemical properties of Non-metals

Reaction of non-metals with oxygen:

Non-metals form respective oxide when react with oxygen.

Non-metal + Oxygen ⇨ Non-metal oxide

When carbon reacts with oxygen, carbon dioxide is formed along with production of heat.

C + O2 ⇨ CO2 + Heat

When carbon is burnt in insufficient supply of air, it forms carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a toxic substance. Inhaling of carbon monoxide may prove fatal.

2C + O2 ⇨ 2CO + Heat

Sulphur gives sulphur dioxide when react with oxygen. Sulphur caught fire when exposed to air.

S + O2 ⇨ SO2

When hydrogen reacts with oxygen it gives water.

2H2 + O2 ⇨ 2H2O
