it's simple.

let's take an example of oxygen

so atomic no. of oxygen is 8

now in electronic configuration we do minus with the atomic no. of any element

so according to scientists we have to minus with 2 from 8

so 8-2 = 6

now minus with 8 but only 6 electrons are left

so it's valency will be 2 because oxygen needs 2 electrons more to complete it shell

so the valency will be 2

in this way we can calculate the valency
