This question is based on the short story 'Two Gentlemen of Verona' by A.J. Cronin.
The nurse told the narrator about the two boys, Nicola and Jacopo, and how the war had robbed them of their home and family. After the war, they were reunited with Lucia and came to know about her illness. They admitted her to the hospital and regularly paid her hospital fees.
The nurse had no idea what they did. But the author knew that they worked tirelessly from morning till night doing odd jobs in order to earn money for Lucia's treatment. That is why he said "Yes, I agree they couldn't do it better."
