The shortest route that I can take to reach the opposite corner is the <b>diagonal</b> route.

This is because if we divide the floor into two right triangles, we get two sides of the room and the hypotenuse in the triangle.
We know that the sum of any two sides of a triangle is always greater than the third side. So we don't want to go the longer way.
Going straight from side to side will be longer because then we'll have to travel two sides of the floor.

So, we take the hypotenuse, which is the shortest route in this case.
