Subject: Decline in girl child population

Dear Sir,

I wish to share my views on a report on the girl child population published in your newspaper newspaper on the 14th of June 2019.  Being a social worker, I was aware of the problem, but the numbers are truly alarming. The male to female child ratio is so terribly skewed that it threatens the gender balance in society. Furthermore, it also puts a huge question mark on the image of India as a progressive nation.

Female foeticide rates are very high, that too in a nation that supposedly reveres goddesses like Durga and Kali. In fact some of the nation's longest religious celebrations, the Durga Puja and the Navaratri are in honour of these goddesses. Our scriptures also hold girls and women in high esteem but evidently modern day India does not.

It is high time that outreach projects are executed to educate the rural, the semi-urban  and the urban populations. The poor need to be made aware of government schemes that are meant exclusively for girls like special low premium insurance policies. The educated segment needs to make a conscious decision to oppose dowry in all forms. That is the only way India can fight this social evil. The girl child is not a burden anymore. In fact she can shoulder all responsibilities that a son can; only she needs to be given a chance to survive.

Yours sincerely,

Pankay Sharma

Subject: Save the Girl Child

Dear Sir

Through this letter, I wish to draw the attention of people towards parental discrimination in their treatment of girls and boys.

Girls are still considered a burden on the family. Due to this, in many parts of our country, a girl child is killed within the womb of the mother. Educated as well as uneducated and orthodox people can be seen outside a clinic queued up to do this heinous crime.

It is high time we should realise the importance of women. They should not be confined within the four walls of the house. A nation’s development is possible only when both educated men and women come to the forefront and help in the development of a nation.

It is my humble request to the people to awaken and realise the importance of a girl child. She is not a burden. Let us take care of them and correct the gender imbalance by caring for one’s daughter as much as we do for our sons.

Thanking you

Yours sincerely

Rakesh
